WATERTOWN — The Utica Blue Sox record win streak came to a screeching halt on the road Thursday.

The Watertown Rapids scored six runs in the opening two innings and then totaled seven in the sixth inning to earn a 16-6 mercy-rule victory over the Blue Sox in Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League game at Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds Stadium.

The setback — Utica’s largest of the season — snaps the team’s PGCBL-record win streak at 14 games. Utica is 18-4 overall this season.

Utica did not have offensive leaders and local standouts such as Ryan Enos and Dewey Roden.

Luke Odden, Edwin Tavarez, Troy Hamilton and Brady Short each had two hits for Utica.

Utica and Watertown combined for 23 hits and 11 errors in the game. Utica used five pitchers.

Utica trailed 6-0 before getting two runs in each the fourth and fifth innings — including three unearned runs — to get within 6-4. That would be the closest Utica would get.

Watertown closed out the game with an extended eighth inning with help from a two-run double by Elvis Lopez, two runs scored on a wild pitch and a home run — all with no outs. With two outs and the bases loaded, Connor Maxwell scored on a wild pitch to end the game.

Utica was scheduled to play league-leading Amsterdam on Friday at Murnane Field in Utica. Game details were unavailable as of press time.
